Newborn sessions with siblings are always high energy. What I try to assure parents is that we can harness this energy to create beautiful, unique moments that represent their family. We tickle and play, jump on the bed and sing Wiggles songs, whatever is going to help make them feel comfortable.
What are the best ways to ensure the session goes as smoothly as possible?
1. PHOTOS ARE FUN!
As parents we often resort to threats of removing toys, treats or special items if behavior isn’t ideal. I am not saying that this doesn’t work in other situations, but we want your child/ren to come in to the studio expecting a happy experience, not scared. Prepare your child by telling them a little bit about me, and my camera that sometimes hides all sorts of insects inside it – most commonly spotted are butterflies and caterpillars, but we have been known to see other favourite critters too!
2. COME PREPARED
The studio is toddler friendly and snacks are more than welcome. A lunch box with some substantial items to fill your child up and some treats to make the experience special is always a good idea. Sessions can be long, so feel free to bring along favourite toys/games as well. In the studio we have a toy box and Netflix for children to enjoy.
3. MOVE QUICKLY
When working with younger children, especially toddlers, we move through the family and sibling portion of the session quickly. In order to do this, it is best to bring your child in to the studio dressed and ready to go, making the most of their excitement to be in a new place before they get tired and lose interest.
4. MANAGE YOUR EXPECTATIONS
Toddlers are toddlers. They are not going to sit perfectly and behave exactly how you want them to. They will however pick up on your stress. Know that I have some very handy tricks up my sleeve to engage little ones, and despite the fact you feel like you are in the middle of a hurricane, if I am clicking away it means everything is going exactly as it should. So take a deep breath, relax and know that you are in good hands.
